Early Life and Education

Captain Vikram Batra is a lad who is conspicuously described as the savior of Kargil. Thus, he was born on September 9, 1974, in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, India. His parents, Girdhari Lal Batra and Kamal Kanta Batra, were the pillars of the house, as they were both school principal and school teacher, respectively. Though the Batra family belonged to the middle class, their rich principles of life, and their patriotism were instilled, in them.

Aside from his keenness for sports and outdoor activities, Vikram was especially enchanted with all of his school life. However, he completed his education in the DAV Public School in Palampur, and some Central School. His adeptness in leadership, perseverance were visible from school years and he won academic and extra-curricular awards very consistently. His adventure and problem-solving addiction used to be very effective in him.

High School and College

After Dhaval had finished his school, he got enrolled in DAV College, Chandigarh, to be able to study B.Sc. Medical Sciences. During his waterfall at college, he was a member of the National Cadet Corps (NCC). He spent 1.5 years more time in the NCC that handsomely added to his hunger to join the army, and he was able to lead the group despite any complication such as those visits to varied training areas and camps can bring.

Vikram opted to go forward with his childhood dream of being in the Indian Army in 1996. He cleared the Combined Defense Services (CDS) examination and it was not long until he was sent to the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun. At the IMA, he kept up being an excellent leader with a great sense of responsibility, and he graduated from the army school with the rank of Lieutenant in December 1997.

Early Military Career

Vikram got a commission in the 13th Battalion, Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (13 JAK RIF). His first position was in Sopore, Jammu and Kashmir, an area infamous for its dangerous security situation (Military History, n.d.). His hard work and gallantry mostly showed his good fellowship and superiors. He never refused to work on hard projects and always stuck to his duty that he had been assigned to.

The Kargil War

At the beginning of 1999, the situation between India and Pakistan had become tense, and this subsequently resulted in the start of the Kargil War. The Pakistani army along with their militants had illegally crossed over to the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC) and seized strategic positions in the Kargil area. His battalion was soon placed on the border.

Operation Vijay-kerygma the Capture of Point 5140

One of the most important missions during the Kargil War was the recapture of the Point 5140 peak that was held by the enemy. The young Lieutenant Pilot, Vikram, was assigned to finding his platoon and leading the task of the recapture of the peak. Though the terrain was rough and the enemies bombarded, Vikram spurred his men with his characterizing words, “Yeh dil maange more!” (This heart wants more!).

At midnight on the night of June 19th, 1999, Vikram and his team went on a lightning assault on Point 5140. His strength and ability to lead led his group to conquer all the problems and finish the mega-operation. The capture of Point 5140 was a significant point in the war and it boosted the Indian forces’ morale. Vikram’s bravery in this assignment mulled over by the high-ranking officers and he was promoted to the rank of Captain.

The Final Battle and Martyrdom

Featuring the tiring walks, and the wounded parts from preceding battles, Vikram overcoursed once again offering to lead his men besides. On July 7, 1999, Vikram and the other members of the team started climbing along with while the enemies were attacking them with heavy fire.

One of Vikram’s colleagues had a serious injury during the brutal fight. To maintain the situation and to rescue his friend, Vikram, who was incredibly courageous, continued to head towards the front. Vikram got killed by enemy firing while shifting his fellow soldier that he rescued. During the Kargil War, Vikram’s self-sacrifice had become one of the most significant events of it. Captain Vikram Batra’s heroism and the pride brought the nation an unerasable print. He was honored posthumously for his unique courage and leadership by getting the Param Vir Chakra, India’s top military honor. His award paper said, “He has been posthumously awarded theParam Vir Chakra for his outstanding bravery, uninterrupted and outstanding to an almost superhuman degree.”

His twin brother, Vishal Batra, share a very close relationship with him and did play a great role in preserving the legacy of Vikram.

His ideology of “Carpe Diem,” of course, was what made him live his life to the full and take advantage of any opportunity that came his way. The quote, “Yeh dil maange more,” became a way of Vikram’s spirit and perseverance.
