Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, visited Aizwal and Zokhawsang in Mizoram recently to take stock of the security situation in the region. He has been apprised of the general situation by Colonel Mukesh Sauhta, Commanding Officer, 2 Assam Rifles and Major General Suresh Bhambu, SM, Inspector General Assam Rifles (East). Elaborate briefings dealt in detail with the present security dynamics, continuing efforts, and operations by the Assam Rifles toward creating peace and stability in Mizoram State.
The discussions during the visit noted both the challenges in doing so and the machinery in place that facilitates those challenges. This reiteration brought into light Assam Rifles’s dedication to securing the borders in the northeast part of India and ensuring the locals are safe and sound. The visit also provided an opportunity for Lt Gen Lakhera to examine for himself the adequacy of the measures in place and the areas where the operational effectiveness of the security forces in Mizoram could be further improved.

Moreover, the visit afforded him an excellent chance to listen in firsthand to his troops and gauge their morale and working conditions. He also expressed satisfaction with the operational readiness and resilience shown by the forces when put to the test through internal security challenges. The visit brought out in clear terms the high degree of importance of ongoing senior military oversight and active engagement at various levels so that a tight, response-oriented security construct is maintained per the region’s demands.
