Bharat Forge, BEML, and Data Patterns Join Forces for India’s AMCA Stealth Fighter Program

In a major development for India’s indigenous defence ecosystem, Bharat Forge Limited (BFL), BEML, and Data Patterns (India) Limited have entered into a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program. This fifth-generation stealth fighter project, led by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), is one of India’s most ambitious aerospace ventures.

The Alliance Structure

Under the agreement:

  • Bharat Forge will hold a 50% stake, leveraging its expertise in heavy engineering and advanced materials.
  • BEML will take a 30% share, contributing its proven capabilities in large-scale system integration and defence manufacturing.
  • Data Patterns will hold the remaining 20% stake, bringing cutting-edge strengths in avionics, sensors, and electronic warfare systems.

This partnership reflects a synergy of engineering, manufacturing, and electronic warfare capabilities—a crucial requirement for next-generation stealth platforms.

Competitive Landscape

The BFL–BEML–Data Patterns consortium enters a competitive field where other industry leaders are also vying for a role in the AMCA project. Recently, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) announced a strategic partnership, while aerospace giants like Tata Advanced Systems, Adani Defence, and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) are expected to submit bids, either independently or through joint ventures.

Industry experts believe such competition will drive innovation and accelerate timelines, ultimately benefiting India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) vision in defence manufacturing.

About the AMCA Program

The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is India’s answer to global fifth-generation fighters. Designed indigenously by ADA, it is expected to feature:

  • Stealth design with internal weapons bays
  • Super-cruise capability for sustained supersonic flight
  • Advanced avionics and radar systems
  • Next-generation electronic warfare and counter-measure suites

The program’s roadmap includes building a full-scale engineering model and five prototype aircraft. Proposals are to be submitted by 30 September 2025, after which ADA will issue a formal Request for Proposal (RFP) to shortlisted bidders.

Strategic Significance

If successful, the AMCA program will position India as one of the few nations with a fully indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter capability, alongside the U.S., Russia, and China. It will not only enhance the Indian Air Force’s combat edge but also establish India as a global hub for advanced aerospace innovation.
