Historic Voyage: Indian Navy’s Women Officers Set Sail on Global Circumnavigation Expedition

In a groundbreaking achievement for the Indian Navy and global maritime gender representation, Lieutenant Commander Dilna K. and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A. have embarked on a historic circumnavigation aboard INSV Tarini. Their journey, titled Navika Sagar Parikrama II, commenced on October 2, 2024, from INS Mandovi in Goa. After an arduous 38-day voyage covering over 4,900 nautical miles, they reached their first destination in Fremantle, Western Australia, on November 9.

Their journey garnered further recognition during a tea session at the Western Australia Parliament House. Legislators, including Sue Ellery, Minister for Finance, Commerce, and Women’s Interests, applauded their resilience. Reflecting on their accomplishments, Ellery remarked, “Their journey alongside Humpback whales, through high winds and chilling conditions, showcases their trailblazing spirit, inspiring young women to pursue roles in the Navy.”

Objectives of the Expedition

The Navika Sagar Parikrama II aims to:

  • Promote women’s empowerment and gender equality.
  • Advance oceanic research and environmental awareness.
  • Highlight Indian maritime traditions and self-reliance.

This double-handed sailing mission is the first of its kind for Indian women, structured into five legs with stopovers in Fremantle (Australia), Lyttleton (New Zealand), Port Stanley (Falkland Islands), and Cape Town (South Africa), before returning to Goa.

Preparation and Mentorship

Supported by retired Commander Abhilash Tomy, the officers underwent rigorous training since August 23, including:

  • Seamanship and navigation skills.
  • Meteorology and survival techniques.
  • Medical care and psychological conditioning.

Collaborative Efforts

The expedition involves partnerships with organizations like:

  • National Institute of Oceanography (NIO)
  • Wildlife Institute of India (WII)
  • Sagar Defence
  • Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL)
  • Transform Rural India Foundation (TRIF)
  • Piramal Foundation

This collective initiative underscores the Indian Navy’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and advancing naval capabilities.

As the officers continue their voyage, they exemplify courage and dedication, inspiring a new generation of women to explore uncharted horizons in maritime professions.
